Planning for Continuous Improvement

Overview

The purpose of the British Columbia school system is to enable all learners to become literate, to develop their individual potential and to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to contribute to a healthy, democratic and pluralistic society and a prosperous and sustainable economy. To achieve this purpose, the education sector has a collective mandate to develop the Educated Citizen defined as the intellectual, human and social, and career development of every student. In order to ensure a system-wide focus on continuously improving educational outcomes for all students, the provincial Framework for Enhancing Student Learning Policy specifies the responsibilities for the Ministry of Education and Childcare and boards of education with respect to strategic planning and reporting out on educational outcomes. The policy also identifies ways that the Ministry, boards, Indigenous peoples and other partners in education can contribute to improving educational outcomes in the K-12 education system.

 Enhancing Student Learning

The Framework for Enhancing Student Learning provides the approach to continuous improvement within British Columbia’s K-12 public education sector through a combination of accountability and evidence-informed decision making. The Framework formalizes planning and reporting expectations for all school districts with a focus on improving equity of learning outcomes and enhancing the intellectual, social, and career development of all students in the K-12 public system. The Nechako Lakes School District Enhancing Student Learning Report provides an overview of disaggregated student achievement data, as well as information on the Board’s approach to continuous improvement of student achievement and well-being. Success for children within priority populations, including Indigenous learners, learners with disabilities, and children and youth in care (CYIC) are at the center of our efforts.

As per Section (2)8.3 of the School Act, the board must approve a school plan for every school in the district on an annual basis. All school plans maintain alignment with the four goals of the Board’s Strategic Plan, as well as objectives of the Ministry of Education and Child Care within the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning. School Growth Plans are available to students, families and communities on each school website and on the district website, found at Schools.

District Alignment

The Board of Education has developed a Strategic Plan for the school district (2020-2025). The plan outlines the mission as well as goals for the school district and sets a clear vision for our education system. On an annual basis, the District, under the direction of the Superintendent, develops a Strategic Workplan that operationalizes the Board’s vision and brings the Strategic Plan to life.

As the Board begins to prepare for public engagement in 2025, which will be important for the next iteration of their Strategic Plan,  the District and Board remain committed to:
